Besides teaching, Greek literature and culture is my passion and I am especially fond of the Greek way of living. On behalf of my school, Heilig Hartinstituut Heverlee (near Leuven) I have in the past organized an exchange programme with the 1st Lyceum of Zakynthos. Usually in the summertime I guide Belgian pupils on the island of Santorini.

Dr Alexander VrijdaghsCourse contributorThe classic education (Latin-Sciences) I received in Brussels helped me become an independent, humanistic person. This proved to be most helpful in the course of my life. From 1984 until July 1993 (some months before the genocide) I worked in Rwanda as a science teacher. Despite my disillusion about Africa, in 1996 I accepted a lecturer post in Zambia. This nice period abruptly ended by a car accident. Back in Belgium, I rehabilitated for nearly one year. Subsequently, I started a new life as a PhD student (KULeuven) studying the evolutionary biology of sedges, Cyperaceae. Since then, I have worked as a post-doctoral researcher. I first visited Greece in 1982 and started learning Greek. Greece, its environment and culture became a never-ending passion for me. In 2014, I joined Patricia at the 1st Lyceum of Zakynthos.
